8 Days in the Slovenian Countryside
DAY 1: LJUBLJANA - KRANJ
Upon arrival at Ljubljana airport, you will be met by an English speaking driver-guide and transferred to your hotel in Kranj.
Enjoy a Slovenian culinary experience at your hotel. Alongside a member of the culinary team, you will experience a memorable culinary journey as you create and savor Slovenian specialties from all its gastronomic regions.
DAY 2: KRANJ - LOGAR VALLEY
Today you will drive with your English speaking driver-guide to Komenda to visit a ceramicist's studio. Continue to Kamniska Vistrica and enjoy a trek to Velika Planina, the last shepherd's oasis. The herdsmen’s settlement is one of few last settlements of such size in Europe and has a distinct architecture, which symbolizes Velika Planina. Here you will have the chance to taste dairy products and enjoy a typical herdsmen’s lunch of sour milk and hard-boiled corn mush before you return by cable car.
Continue your day with a drive to your next overnight locale, Logar Valley, one of the most beautiful Alpine glacial valleys in Europe which extends into the Kamnik-Savinja Alps from the north. Enjoy the opportunity for relaxation en route to your hotel, as you take in the peaceful ambiance of the natural beauty.
DAY 3: LOGAR VALLEY
With your guide, set out on a full day of trekking in the Logar Valley today. Set among the over 2,000-meter peaks are sunny meadows and pastures, charcoal-makers’ and foresters’ cottages, wooden flumes for transporting logs, and picturesque natural features beside the springs and tributaries of the Savinja River. On your leisurely hike, you will stop at the mountain hut Klemenci Jama, a small clearing where the widest larch tree in Slovenia grows. Here you can take in an excellent view of the Okrešelj glacial cirque and the walls of the surrounding mountains. You will also stop by the beautiful and impressive Rinka waterfall, the source of Savinja River. A cafe clinging to a rocky crag just next to the waterfall provides the best view of the cascading water.
DAY 4: LOGAR VALLEY - KOBARID
Start your day with a drive towards Bled and visit the Bled Castle and Bled Island. Its many charms include a medieval castle perched high on a rocky cliff, a scenic lake-studded by a tiny wooded island, and the alpine splendor of the nearby Triglav National Park, a natural wonderland of glacial valleys, glittering peaks, limestone canyons, ice-cold tarns, flowered meadows, Alpine forests, pretty hamlets and cascading waterfalls. First, you will visit of the most recognizable symbol of Slovenia, the romantic Bled Castle which is perched high on a mighty cliff above the glacier lake. Next you will take a Pletna boat ride to the Island of Bled and visit the Baroque church.
In the afternoon, you will visit a local beekeeper, and learn everything about bees, and what we can do to preserve these vital animals. Continue on your transfer to Kobarid, and drive through the scenic Vrsic Pass, a high mountain pass across the Julian Alps in northwestern Slovenia.
DAY 5: KOBARID
This morning you will be driven to Bovec, and Soca Valley. The Soca's stunning turquoise hue flows for about 60 miles against a backdrop of imposing limestone mountains cloaked in dense forests, lush meadows rich in wildflowers and a clutch of small towns and villages, including Tolmin, Kobarid and Bovec. Besides its rich history - the WW1 Soca Front was one of the bloodiest mountain battles ever known - the valley is now a hiking, kayaking, and fly-fishing haven with much of the area set aside as part of the Triglav National Park. Rafting on the Soca River has for many years been a hallmark of the Soca Valley. With highly trained and friendly guides you will descend the section between Boka and Trnovo, the most attractive part of the Soca.
Bovec, the valley of inspiration is ideal for a hike where you can recharge your body and soul. This area is blessed with well-preserved and wild nature, mountains, the emerald river with its tributaries, the gentle and unique combination of Alpine and Mediterranean climates, centuries of preserved tradition, and genuine people.
After lunch you will visit Kobarid the place of the biggest alpine battle in the World War I. Kobarid is known for the famous Battle of Caporetto, where the Italian retreat was documented by Ernest Hemingway in his novel A Farewell to Arms. The Kobarid Museum presents the story of these historical events. Kobarid is also the culinary capital of the Primorska region boasting many excellent restaurants.
DAY 6: KOBARID - BRDA
Continue your Slovenia journey with the drive to Tolmin and visit Tolmin Gorge. The chute on the Tolminka River is the lowest point in Triglav National Park and the longest chute in Slovenia. It is also among the deepest. The junction of the gorges of the Tolminka and Zadlascica rivers with their chutes is a unique phenomenon in Slovenia.
Continue towards the very Western corner of Slovenia where beautiful wine growing region: Goriska Brda.
DAY 7: BRDA - LJUBLJANA
Start your day with a visit to a local winery where you will take part in a wine tasting with an on-site wine expert. Savor the flavor and variety that this growing wine region has to offer.
Continue your day with a drive towards Ljubljana. En route you will stop for lunch in Vipava Valley and at Postojna Caves, one of the most visited caves in Europe. The Postojna cave system is the largest known cave system in Slovenia. A visit to a cave such as Postojna deserves full attention due to the diversity of shapes, expansive cave areas, stalactite and stalagmite formations and water characteristics. You can also see an unusual and rare underground animal Proteus Anguinus - the so-called “human fish”. A visit to Postojna cave is a special experience, as an electric train takes you on an hour and a half circle tour of the cave. From the train station inside the cave, a guide will accompany you as you walk among magnificent creations of nature.
DAY 8: LJUBLJANA
Enjoy a walking city tour of Ljubljana and see some of the most significant sights of the old city center such as the picturesque Central open-air market and the Three Bridges. On your tour, you will also visit Ljubljana Castle and the Virtual Museum. Includes entrance fees to Virtual Museum, Ljubljana Castle Tower and cable car to castle.
DAY 9: LJUBLJANA
